Artificial Intelligence (AI): Definition, Types, and How It Works

Artificial Intelligence Definition

What Is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Artificial intelligence is a subfield of computer science that deals with giving machines human-like intelligence and abilities. To achieve this, researchers use methods and techniques such as machine learning, artificial neural networks, and deep learning.

The English term for artificial intelligence (AI) is Artificial Intelligence (AI). It was coined by the American computer scientist John McCarthy in the 1950s. Although the term ‘artificial intelligence’ has existed for several decades, there is still no clear and universally accepted definition. This is partly because the concept of “intelligence” itself is very multifaceted, and different sciences and cultures interpret it quite differently. In the field of psychology, the following definition of intelligence is often used: intelligence is the ability to learn from experience, to solve problems, and to adapt to new situations.

Artificial intelligence is a subfield of computer science that deals with giving machines human-like intelligence. Machines are intended to use their AI capabilities to achieve or complement intelligence comparable to that of humans. To this end, human learning and thinking are technically simulated and transferred to machines using algorithms, data processing methods, and computing power.

What Are the Main Capabilities of Artificial Intelligence?

Typical capabilities of a machine with artificial intelligence include:

  • The ability to reason logically
  • The ability to learn independently
  • The ability to solve problems
  • The ability to perceive environmental data and interact with the environment
  • The ability to understand and produce language
  • The ability to adapt to new situations and to self-correct
  • The ability to complete tasks independently

To realise these capabilities, insights from computer science, as well as other sciences such as psychology, neuroscience, mathematics, statistics, communication science, linguistics, and others, are applied. Artificial intelligence, with its findings, also influences numerous other scientific disciplines.

What Are the Different Types of Artificial Intelligence?

Basically, different types of artificial intelligence can be distinguished.

1. Weak Artificial Intelligence (AI)

is limited to a specific application area. Machines with weak AI can only perform tasks within this specific area and fail when faced with tasks in other areas. Their intelligence is rather superficial. They lack the ability to develop a deeper understanding of overarching relationships.

The computer science methods and algorithms used are specifically designed for this one application area. Typical examples of weak artificial intelligence include text and character recognition programmes, navigation systems, and speech recognition systems.

2. Strong Artificial Intelligence (AI)

In contrast, strong AI exhibits a significantly higher level of intelligence, more similar to that of humans. It is comparable to humans and may even exceed them in intellect and abilities. Systems with strong AI are capable of solving difficult and complex tasks across various fields. They combine many different skills, react flexibly, and possess comprehensive communication capabilities.

So far, the development of systems with strong artificial intelligence has only been achieved in rudimentary form. Strong artificial intelligence remains primarily a vision of the future. Experts also disagree on whether it will ever be achievable.

Symbolic vs. Subsymbolic AI

Another way to differentiate artificial intelligence is to classify it according to the methodology used, which distinguishes between symbolic and subsymbolic artificial intelligence.

Symbolic Artificial Intelligence

Symbolic artificial intelligence operates based on rules and logic. Knowledge is represented using logical rules and abstract symbols (numbers, words, and mathematical operators). The basic idea behind symbolic artificial intelligence follows a classic top-down approach that attempts to reconstruct human knowledge and thought via a logical-symbolic level.

Using collected facts and relationships, humans create or program an abstract, logical model with comprehensible, transparent solutions. The intelligence level of symbolic artificial intelligence is hardly comparable to human intelligence. Its application remains limited to tasks that can be represented and solved using logical rules and relationships.

Subsymbolic Artificial Intelligence

Subsymbolic artificial intelligence, a category that includes current large-scale generative language models, chatbots , and text-to-image generators, follows a bottom-up approach. It is based on artificial neural networks and large datasets, which it uses to acquire its knowledge and skills largely independently through training.

No human-programmed logical rules are necessary to solve problems or make decisions and predictions.

How Does Artificial Intelligence Work?

Various methods and technologies are used to implement artificial intelligence systems. One very important of these is machine learning (ML). Through machine learning, a system can improve its performance and capabilities by analyzing data and applying learning processes based on that data. Machine learning can be categorized into unsupervised, supervised, and reinforcement learning.

What Are the Types of Machine Learning?

  • Supervised learning: The model is trained with labelled data (e.g., pictures of cats and dogs with appropriate labels).
  • Unsupervised learning: The model recognises patterns in unstructured data, e.g., for segmenting customer groups in e-commerce.
  • Reinforcement learning: The algorithm learns through reward systems – this is how chess or Go programs are trained, for example.

What Is Deep Learning in Artificial Intelligence?

When artificial neural networks are used for learning, whose functionality is modelled on that of the human brain and which consist of several layers of neurons abstracted and interconnected in a mathematical model, this approach to machine learning is called deep learning.

By training with large datasets, such neural networks are able to recognize complex patterns, process them, and draw conclusions. Their knowledge and capabilities are represented by the connections and weights of the neural links between input and output neurones.

What Is Natural Language Processing (NLP)?

Another artificial intelligence technique is Natural Language Processing (NLP). It deals with the processing, evaluation, understanding, and generation of text and natural language. Current large-scale language models, such as those of OpenAI’s GPT family or Google’s Gemini, are based on deep learning and deep neural networks with billions of parameters. They achieve remarkable results in the field of text and communication.

Conclusion

Artificial Intelligence (AI) allows machines to accomplish the activities that usually need intelligence of a human being like learning, problem-solving, language-processing, etc. Technologies like machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing contribute to making an AI system successful. With the growth of AI technologies, it becomes necessary to know about its capabilities and limitations.
